Fruit & Veggie Stand

Miniature #8 – Constructed 11/2023

Fun Facts

There are many Farm Stands throughout Cape Cod & The Islands (Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard) offering delicious fruits and vegetables grown locally and often entirely on their own farms. Local roadside farm stands are a great way to support local growers while enjoying fresh, delicious fruits, vegetables, honey, and baked goods.

There is no better way to meet local Cape Cod farmers, while helping support their hard work and effort. Fruits and vegetables are picked in the fields just a few hours before being available for purchase. Many local Farm-To-Table Restaurants play an important part in supporting the local farmers on Cape Cod.

Description

The importance of roadside fruit & veggie stands to Cape Cod growers, residents, and visitors alike, had me adding one to my list of things to build for Capetown. I found designing, constructing and decorating this stand to be a great deal of fun.

The roadside stand sits on a 12″x12″ plywood base. The overall piece stands at 9″ high and the time invested to design and build was approximately 45 hrs.

Materials Used

The interior and exterior were constructed with craft sticks adhered vertically to a frame of 2mm thick craft plywood and stained Golden Oak in color. A wood burner was used to make the nail holes in the exterior boards. The oranges and plums were made with clay.

The roof was made from craft aluminum foil that was run through a tube squeezer to form the corrugation. This was my first attempt to create a metal roof and its success gave me the confidence to use the technique again later on the miniature barn roof. Acrylic paint was used to age the roof as weather naturally does over time.

The chalkboard sign was made with popsicle sticks and chalkboard spray paint. A layer of Vallejo Earth Texture was applied to the plywood base with straw and grass applied on top. The straw bales were made from Styrofoam blocks covered with straw and thin wire.
