Beach Cottage

Miniature #7 – Constructed 10/2023

Fun Facts

Cape Cod is a popular destination for beachgoers from all over because of its 559.6 miles of coastline. There are upwards of 60 public beaches, many dotted with cozy cottages rented by vacationers.

Beach cottages are furnished and constructed to withstand high winds and storms. They offer a private dwelling with ocean views. Many are built on pilings to withstand extremely high tides and storm surges.

Description

This was the first miniature that had the building raised on pilings over sand, with storm shutters. It was exciting and fun to build and remains one of my personal favorites.

The beach cottage sits on a 12″x12″ plywood base. The overall piece stands at 11.5″ high and the time invested to design and build was approximately 60 hrs.

Materials Used

The exterior of the beach cottage was constructed with popsicle sticks attached vertically to a frame of 3mm thick craft plywood and painted with acrylic paint. A thin, square wooden dowel was used as a spacer between the vertical popsicle sticks to add an interesting look to the cottage’s exterior.

The roof shingles were made from black cardstock paper, sprayed with textured spray paint, and cut by hand to resemble realistic roof shingles. The storm windows were made from popsicle sticks and round, wooden dowels to hold them open.

The interior of the cottage was painted with acrylic paint. The furniture was built using square wooden dowels and craft plywood, then stained a Golden Oak color.

  1. Incredible work!! I love the attention to detail and all the effort involved, but what really shines through is the passion you have for creating these beautiful works of art. Take a bow, you deserve it!
