Fire & Police Station

Miniature #16 – Constructed 02/2024

Fun Facts

In the early 1900s, Cape Cod became part of the state’s Fire Lookout Tower network. Towers were constructed in various towns to facilitate better detection and coordination of prompt firefighting efforts. To this day, these towers continue to play a crucial role in monitoring the vast forests of Cape Cod and protecting the natural beauty and ecosystems of this unique region.

Cape Cod’s earliest firehouse dates back to the early 1800s. In 1836, the first pumper, the “Washington” was purchased. The “Washington” served for 40 years and is on exhibit at the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum.

The Provincetown Fire Department is one of only two all-volunteer Fire Departments left on Cape Cod.  Volunteer service is often a multi-generational commitment with some of the members representing up to fourth generation firefighters.

Small towns typically have limited budgets and fewer resources. Combining fire and police services allows them to pool resources, share facilities, and reduce operational costs.

Description

The small, miniature town of Capetown has a combined fire and police station. The inspiration and original idea to combine the two came from the small town where I was raised.

The Fire & Police Station sits on a 12″x12″ plywood base. The overall piece stands at 9.5″ high and the time invested to design and build was approximately 50 hrs.

Materials Used

The station was built using 3mm thick craft plywood and covered with craft sticks and bricks, both painted with acrylic paint. The bricks were made from foamboard that was scored and painted to resemble realistic bricks.

The interior walls were painted with acrylic paint. Plastic sheeting was cut-to-size and used as window glass.

The roof shingles were made from black cardstock paper, sprayed with textured spray paint, and cut by hand to resemble realistic roof shingles. An American flag was added for authenticity.

The plywood base was covered with foamboard and scored and painted with acrylic paint to look like concrete.

Decals, both stock & custom designs, were provided by www.threeinchesunder.com.
