Sea & Suds

Miniature #2 – Constructed 08/2023

Fun Facts

Cape Cod, with its sandy beaches and lively atmosphere, is home to some delightful beach bars. Most are seasonal in operation, opening on Memorial Day and closing on Labor Day, due to the harshness of the winter months.

Many bars are located right on the beach, making them a very social place for people to enjoy while spending time at the ocean. While some bars provide patrons with the rental of boats during the day, the fun extends well into the evening when bars host local bands to provide entertainment.

Description

Here at Sea & Suds, beach visitors can rent a rowboat or canoe and stop in for a “cold one” at this classic beach bar. Of course, famous Cape Cod Potato Chips are always available.

The bar sits on a 12″x12″ plywood base. The overall piece stands at 9.5″ high and the time invested to design and build was approximately 60 hrs.

Materials Used

The popsicle sticks attached to the front of the stand, along with the pergola style roof made from square balsa wood dowels, were painted with watercolor paint to make them look weathered from the salt air. Small, square balsa wood dowels were used for constructing the stools and painted with acrylic paint to match the stand. After the paint was dry on the stools, fine sandpaper was used to scuff the edges to add a touch of wear and tear.

In order to form the boats and canoe, popsicle sticks were boiled in water to make them bendable. Popsicle sticks were hand carved to create 16 paddles, two for each of the four boats and eight for decorations on the beach bar itself. The life preserver was made from an old hose washer painted with acrylic paint. The ropes, made from white cotton string, were soaked in watercolor paint to make them look like rope weathered from the elements.

Vallejo ‘desert sand’ was used to create the beach sand. A string of fairy lights was added to light up Sea & Suds for nighttime entertainment.
